Gates Cambridge Scholarship (PhD)
Supervisors: Professor Simon Baron-Cohen and Dr. Chris Baker
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship has really defined my graduate experience at Cambridge. Established by a donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Gates supports graduate-level research by individuals who are committed to improving the lives of others. Gates Scholars come from all disciplines in the University and all countries in the world, so the community is unsurprisingly diverse and inspiring. My doctoral research is in neuroscience, with a focus on visual perception in autism; but research areas from medieval musicology to economics are represented in the Scholarship. The Gates hosts its own talk series, social events, and research groups: a very fulfilling graduate experience.
Individuals from every country outside of the UK are eligible for the Gates. It provides full-cost scholarships for any graduate degree at Cambridge (including generous stipend, conference, and fieldwork allowances, as well as university fees).
Applications are initiated through the usual GRADSAF application to Cambridge, but require an additional “personal” reference and a cover letter. Deadlines for the application are fixed, usually in the fall/winter (see the Gates website for precise dates). At this stage, applicants for the Gates are privately ranked by each department and put forward to the Gates Trust. If shortlisted for further consideration, applicants proceed onto a round of interviews, from which the final selection is made. Over 4,000 applicants apply for approximately 90 Scholarships each year.
Please see the Gates website for more information.
